I don’t know about your family, but each year around this time we find ourselves continually talking to our children about gratefulness and thankfulness. It’s hard for them when there is such a focus on “getting gifts”. 

Why do we exchange gifts every year?

Why is this such a symbol of Christmas? 

Well, it all started about two thousand years ago when God sent us His gift, Jesus. As with any gift, you have to first know it is meant for you for it to matter at all. God’s gift holds no exclusions – it is meant for all. Then, you must take it – receive it and make it yours. 

We give gifts each year as a reminder of the gift that God gave to us. This gift is one like no other. This gift brings peace to the soul. A peace of knowing that no matter what you are going through, no matter what circumstances surround you, He is right there with you. He will never leave you or forsake you.

I have experienced this gift first-hand. I couldn’t imagine living in such turbulent times without His hand on my life, Mike’s life and each of our boys’ lives.

What is this Gift and how do I receive it?

John 3:16 – God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not die but have everlasting life.

I don’t know about you, but Christmastime makes me very nostalgic. I think back (way back) to when I was a kid and all the things that made Christmas special to me.

We had several traditions when I was growing up. Each Christmas Eve, we would go to visit my Dad’s family and exchange gifts. I can remember driving home with my nose pressed against the window searching for Santa. My brother and I did this every year. 

Christmas morning would arrive early (as in most homes!) and we would open gifts. My stocking always had a PEZ dispenser…lol. We would go to church and then spend the day with my Mom’s family. A big dinner – more gifts. Then my Grandfather would make soup from the hambone (his nickname was Soupy). 

Being in a Blended family makes traditions like these hard to have. We alternate holidays with our ex’s so it is different each year. However, we still have managed our own little traditions.

Each year we sit together and watch the original series of Frosty the Snowman, Santa Claus and Rudolph. The boys and I decorate the tree while Michael decorates outside. The boys take turns setting up our Manger scene that my Dad made. We read the Christmas Story from Luke and sing Happy Birthday to Jesus on Christmas day.

I think having traditions helps to create a secure environment for our kids. It’s something they can count on being there year after year.
