Some of you may remember my shopping trip to Albertsonsa couple of weeks ago where I spent $127 and saved $161 using coupons. I love the meat prices at Albertsons, but do you know that to do a full trip like this took me 3 hours?

I went to Aldi on the 23rd. I spent the same amount of money and a ton less time. To do a full trip to Aldi, I am in and out in less than an hour.

I have been pondering this, because, as much as I am an advocate for using coupons, our time is also worth money. For myself, I have decided to do the majority of our shopping at Aldi (Aldi doesn’t accept coupons but they have have low prices).  I will continue to buy our meats from Albertsons because they have the best meat sales around for us. Now, there are some items at Aldi that I can get cheaper with a coupon elsewhere. If it is a huge difference, I either don’t get that item or will pick it up later if it is a necessity. 

I believe that we have to be wise in all ways of saving. If your time is worth X amount of dollars per hour, you have to decide how to spend it and spend is wisely.

Anyway, back to my Aldi trip. I bought 91 items and spent $126.45. I didn’t have to buy meats this time because I still have some in the freezer from that last Albertsons trip.

As you can see, I bought a lot of snack foods. With 4 boys home all day for the Christmas break, we need lots of food!!! They eat constantly!

The two deals I was most excited about aren’t even for me. We are slated to bring snacks for one of the soccer teams this week and we are bringing frozen grapes (or energy pills as they are known on the soccer team), the snack pack of cookies and water bottles. Hope they like!

Some of our readers have asked, “Why Aldi when you can use coupons at the bigger grocery stores?”. Quite simply, one of the main reasons is for the meats. The meats are in many cases 35% – 50% less expensive than you might pay at a regular grocery store. When you have a family of 6 (4 boys) this can knock quite a bit off the grocery tab and of course in most cases there are no coupons for meats from the meat dept. Here is an example from the current weekly flier of some great deals and price comparisons for similiar cereals:

Here is the best thing - these cereals taste awesome! I use to be a brand shopper. It took a little while for my wife to convince me to try it. Sadly, the kids were the same way. If you did a blind taste test you probably wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. The Millville brands are of phenomenal quality and taste. No, I don’t work for Aldi or Millville and we don’t get any $$’s from them either. Give Aldi a try, you won’t be disappointed. Mike.

I did pretty well as far as price goes today, but I did notice that they went up quite a but on a few of their products. That made me a little sad . Oh well, all in all, still a good trip at $127 for the above. (97 items)

We were strictly Publix and Albertsons shoppers until our Aldi opened in the spring. And I’ll tell you, we have saved a ton! Try it, you’ll like it!

I was trying to remember when the last time was that I did a full grocery shopping trip to Aldi. I looked it up and it has been over a month!! We did go on a mini vacation and I did go to Albertsons to pick up the chicken roasters when they were on sale, some hamburger, bread and milk. I knew we were eating out of the pantry and freezer, I just didn’t realize how long it had been! So, today’s shopping trip was a little more O.O.P., but when you break it down – it amounts to some great savings.

 So much more….I just can’t list it all. My total for this trip was $212.19 and I bought 136 items!!  (average price per item – $1.56 – good considering I bought quite a few meat items!). This should last our Family of 6 at least 2 weeks. Our freezer is stocked again and the pantry is bulging (that gives me a warm fuzzy feeling…lol). I would like to give you some great stories about how I used this or that coupon but the truth is that Aldi prices, for a big shopping trip, overall beats any coupon usage I’ve done in the past at other stores that accept them.
